Originally sold as the fibreglass bodied Supro ‘Dual Tone’, and in production from 1961 to 1965, the reworked ‘Twin Tone’ swaps the fibreglass for a solid timber body, and installs humbuckers in place of the original’s single coils. The humbuckers give the guitar substantially more balls than the original, resulting in a great mix of garage thrasher and vintage Les Paul. And while based on David Bowie’s famous Supro ‘Dual Tone’, the modern version is a more stable, more player friendly, and more versatile guitar.
Dirty slide tone
We’ve mentioned Bowie and Link Wray, but scads more Dual/Twin Tone players include the likes of Jimmy Page, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, and Dan Aeurbach of the Black Keys. You’ll often see name players using these guitars for slide work, as they deliver a fabulous dirty slide tone!
Top-flight features
This very cool first year Twin Tone, (recognisable from the twin level, black-and-white scratchplate design, which is slightly different to that of later models), comes packed with top-flight features, including full 24 3/4" scale Maple neck, (modern C-profile), 15” radius Rosewood fingerboard with classy, Les Paul-style block inlays, medium-low vintage style frets, (similar to Gibson’s famous “fretless wonders”, but not quite as wide), and vintage Kluson-style nickel tuners.
Very stylish
The black neck is fully lacquered, including the fingerboard edges, giving them a very stylish, almost tortoiseshell look.
Hot-Rail humbuckers
Down the fat end: a matched set of Hot-Rail humbuckers; 3-way pickup switching; separate volume and tone controls for each pickup; Tune-O-Matic bridge; plus the custom Twin-Tone chromed tailpiece, which was exclusive to the initial production run.
