Some things just naturally go together: fish & chips, hot chocolate & marshmallows, shoes & socks… Fender & Surf Green. And since it first appeared, way back in 1966, Fender’s mighty Mustang Bass has also made some pretty good partnerships: Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads, and her Mustang Bass; original Rolling Stones bassist, Bill Wyman; current Stones bassist, Darryl Jones; Holger Czukay of Can; Sheryl Crow; XTC’s Colin Moulding; Alan Lancaster of Status Quo; Raul Malo of the Mavericks; Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon; Jimi Hendrix Experience bass player, Noel Redding; Sharin Foo of the Raveonettes… and heaps, heaps more!
The 2018 American Performer series Mustang Bass saw Fender keeping pretty much to history, though with just enough modern day tweaks to make for a much more player friendly instrument. satin-finished Modern-C profile Maple neck; medium-jumbo frets; tapered tuner shafts that keep your string windings tight; TUSQ nut; and individual bridge saddles for improved intonation.
With a smaller body than a Precision or Jazz, the lighter weight – even the tuners are lighter – makes this a super-easy, all-night player. And the Yosemite pickups – a split-coil Mustang Bass in the middle, and single-coil Jazz Bass at the bridge – coupled with the Greasebucket tone circuit, lets you cut your treble, without going muddy. Full marks all round to Fender on this one!
