Description

If you’ve played or heard an American Professional series Jazzmaster and thought it sounded pretty decent with its stock Jazzmaster pickups, you’ll be completely blown away with this custom ordered job, loaded up with a killer set of the Tim Shaw Jazzmaster humbuckers, which Fender theoretically only installed in 2018’s sixtieth anniversary triple-pickup model.

Growly bite

Exclusively encased in shiny Filter’Tron covers, Shaw created these humbuckers with the Jazzmaster legacy firmly in his thoughts, adding just a touch of almost church bell chime to the neck, while the bridge still has that famous Jazzmaster “spooky tone”, plus an added bit of growly bite for the 21st century.

This is it!

We don’t know of another one of these in existence – chances are, this is it! A custom order for a fast rising young country player from Phoenix, Arizona, who regretfully traded the Jazzmaster, (and several other guitars), earlier this year, to help fund the purchase of a vintage Telecaster, previously owned by one of his country-rock heroes.

Classic Jazzmaster styling

With its solid Alder body, finished in deep 3-tone Sunburst, this is classic Jazzmaster styling. Add an incredibly Brazilian-looking slab Rosewood fingerboard, emerging beautifully from the dark tortoise scratchplate, and it’s vintage Jazzmaster pizazz all the way! The board features a 9½” radius, with Jazzmaster narrow-tall frets, plus a genuine, hand-shaped bone nut.

Vintage-style floating tremolo

The Jazzmaster (and Jaguar) bridge system was completely redesigned for the American Professional model. It retains the vintage-style floating tremolo and tremolo lock button, while adding nickel-plated brass Mustang saddles and super stability to the screw-in tremolo arm – it stays exactly where you want it. The bridge saddles are now exactly matched to the curvature of the fingerboard radius. (The often misunderstood locking vibrato system is not the On/Off that many players imagine, but a unique system that will immediately take you back to pitch in the event of a broken string)

Plays like a dream

The 25½” scale Maple neck boasts a really player friendly 60’s “oval-C” shape – very slightly meatier than today’s more prevalent, flatter “modern-C” – which feels great in your hand. In fact, the whole guitar feels great… and it plays like a dream.

That cool guitar sound

So, who have been some of the big name Jazzmaster players over the years? Here’s a fairly impressive partial list: Thom Yorke; Elvis Costello; Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth; J Mascis; Jeff Tweedy; Ric Ocasek; Chelsea Wolfe; Tom Verlaine; Win Butler of Arcade Fire; Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins; Tommy James, (Tommy James & The Shondells); Jim Root; Jason Pierce, (Spiritualized); Georgia Maq from Melbourne’s fabulous Camp Cope; Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo; Emma Anderson, (Lush); the Triffids' David McComb; Don Wilson of the Ventures, while Kevin Shields, of My Bloody Valentine, uses almost nothing but Jazzmasters, with a massive personal collection. Johnny Cash's legendary guitarist, Luther Perkins was a very early Jazzmaster player, and Jimi Hendrix played a Jazzmaster extensively in his pre-Experience days. Do some YouTube research and you’ll find yourself going, “Ah-ha! So that’s where that cool guitar sound comes from!”

*Right before the pandemic curtailed international air travel, our country player from Phoenix was returning to the US, when he was pulled aside for the long-hair-musician-customs-search at a certain “old school” Eastern European airport. Reliving the heady seventies days, customs staff went as far as pulling up the case liners in their search for contraband. We have left the case as-is, so let us know if you’d like us to glue the liners back in… or if you'd rather keep it how it is and share the story
