Description

In 1964 Fender added the Mustang to their evolving electric guitar range, with several tweaks over the next couple of years eventually delivering the final, much-loved model that now commands substantial vintage prices. Then, in 1969 they added a new cosmetic touch – a variation of the racing stripes, then featuring on many of the day’s fast cars, Mustangs included.

Candy Apple Red

The new Competition Mustang was a definite head-turner, and probably most so in the combination of Candy Apple Red with cream stripes. As everyone knows, red cars go faster, therefore red cars with racing stripes must go faster still! So, a red guitar with racing stripes… well, no doubt you can figure that out yourself.

Condition

The Competition model was in production from 1969 to 1973, which makes this one of the last ones built. The guitar is in Excellent+ condition with only light play wear, limited to some scattered pick scratches, plus a handful of tiny paint chips – but no major dings or damage – and some light buckle-rash on the back. The beautifully grained Maple neck is perfect, the frets are in fantastic condition, as is the superb, dark-chocolaty Rosewood board. It even comes with its original Fender hard shell case and vintage Ace strap!*

The Mustang’s enviable versatility

Over the years, Mustang aficionados – many of them as much in love with the cool and unique tremolo system as with the guitar itself – have included the likes of Lee Ranaldo & Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, Kim Deal, (Pixies, Breeders), Jimi Hendrix, Liz Phair, John Fogerty, Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey, David Byrne, Adrian Belew, and more recently, Matt Healy of the 1975 and Norah Jones. That’s an incredibly diverse list of players and styles of music, which should allow a good idea of the Mustang’s enviable versatility.

Free courier delivery

Very under-priced at only $3790, this is your chance to join the big name players listed above, in the exclusivity of the vintage Mustang club. *Ace straps were famously used by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley and loads more top name players of the day. Sixties and Woodstock era Ace straps sell in the US from $100 - $300, depending on condition. This would definitely be a $300 strap!
