Description

This incredible one-off build from the world famous Fender Custom Shop in California was created for Joey Mazzola of nineties American band, Sponge. Joey custom ordered the guitar without the usual Jazzmaster tremolo system and rhythm circuit, the finished instrument being a Jazzmaster like no other.

Fast and effortless playing

Built in 1998, the guitar features a fabulous, AAA-grade birdseye Maple neck, which is vintage tinted and gun oil finished, while the 21-fret old-style Rosewood slab board has a player friendly radius of 9.5”. It all adds up to fast and effortless playing! A custom set of Jazzmaster pickups, gold-plated hardware and heavyweight 3-ply scratchplate complete the picture.

Be mightily impressed

The Jazzmaster pickups really pack a punch, with output resistance a whopping 12.1 Ohm at the neck and 12.9 at the bridge! Click on our soundfile and prepare to be mightily impressed – and not just with the oomph, but the incredibly diverse range of tones. This Custom Shop job practically defines ‘versatile’.

What Jazzmaster freaks have been dreaming of for years

With its hardtail bridge and no rhythm circuit or tremolo, this is exactly what Jazzmaster freaks have been dreaming of for years, so the minute it came on the market, we snapped it up. Another big design plus is that the guitar is considerably lighter than your regular Jazzmaster, its stripped back features helping it weigh in at just 6lb 12oz / 3.05kg, making it a real “whole gig” axe.

Condition

In overall Very Good+ cosmetic condition, you can see some buckle-worming on the back in pic # 5, along with various light scuffs and surface scratches in the finish, (pic # 2). The neck and board are in almost Mint condition, and the frets are perfect.

Detroit Cobras

Post-Sponge, (‘Plowed’, ‘Speed Racer’*, ‘Have You Seen Mary’), Joey Mazzola was with the Detroit Cobras for several years, including the period covering their classic Baby album, which featured ‘I Wanna Holler (But the Town’s Too Small)’, ‘Hot Dog’ and the monster hit, ‘Cha Cha Twist’. The Jazzmaster could well have featured on any of Joey’s Detroit Cobras recordings.

Plays great, sounds fantastic

We know the guitar is priced very low for being a one-off Custom shop built, celebrity owned instrument, but, as usual, whenever we get a good deal on something, we pass the savings straight on to our customers. Complete with deluxe Fender hard shell case, (that looks almost brand new), Joey Mazzola’s Custom Shop Jazzmaster SHIPS FREE to any address in Australia. ($100 airfreight to New Zealand, $175 to the US, Canada, UK and mainstream European countries). It looks sleek & sexy, plays great, sounds fantastic… job done!

*‘Speed Racer’ was taken from the 1995 indie tribute album, Saturday Morning: Cartoons’ Greatest Hits. (Note Drew Barrymore in the video clip!)

** ‘Cha Cha Twist’ was famously used in an extended advertising campaign for Diet Coke
