Here’s a beautiful 19 year old blonde to hang around your neck. A 1996 American Standard Stratocaster, finished in a particularly nice Vintage White, from a special mid-nineties run, where Fender sprayed only a very thin undercoat layer, for better tone transfer. On top of the thin-skin primer is a real touch of old school Fender paint shop savoir-faire – a hidden coat of rare, Sonic Blue, which gives a unique, added depth to the Vintage White, itself now aged to a very tasty pale blonde.
Construction
A solid Alder body, vintage-tint Maple neck, (standard, modern C-profile), and 22 medium-jumbo fret Rosewood fingerboard – this is the time-tested, classic Strat combination. Note that the fingerboard is particularly nice, showing similar open grain to that of highly prized Brazilian Rosewood. Two-point tremolo system, American Standard Stratocaster pickups and 5-way switching complete this great package.

Sonically, she dirties up great, but also plays as clean and polite as you want. Sixteen to eighteen seconds of natural sustain, and just listen to that top-end spank and attack – this is 100% what a classic Strat is all about. You can really get your Jeff Beck on with this lovely white Strat. Or your Jimi, or Jimmy, or your Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray, David Gilmour, Joanne Shaw Taylor, George Harrison, or even a real modern legend, like Ana Popovic, (pic # 8).
TBX system
Speaking of Jeff beck, the guitar comes with Fender’s classic TBX system, (Treble/Bass eXpander), a two-way cut/boost for both the treble and bass. From 1-5 on the second tone pot is the same as 1-10 on a regular tone control; the knob softly clicks into a centre detent at the 5 position, switching to a no-load circuit, for straight-through, un-processed tone; then, from 5 around to 10 you significantly increase the amount of treble, midrange, bass – and level – that’s fed to your amp. Just a few minutes playtime and you’ll see what made Jeff Beck such a fan of the TBX system.
Ready to plug in and play
The only real signs of playwear are on the scratchplate and backplate, with no major dings or knocks anywhere – in fact, for a 19yo guitar, the finish is almost immaculate. There’s a couple of very vague capo marks on the back of the neck, the obligatory hairline stress crack in the neck pocket paint, and that’s about it. Frets are great, (pic # 5), and she’s straight off the workbench with a new set of strings, nice, medium action and perfect intonation – all ready to plug in and play.
