Mike Eldred, head of the famous Fender Custom Shop, says he envisioned La Cabronita as “the asshole cousin” that turns up out of the blue to disrupt an otherwise peaceful family gathering. His original name for his tweaked Telecaster was Cabronista, little bastard in Mexican, but Eldred and his Custom Shop buddies didn’t think the company would let him get away with that, so they created their own name, Cabronita.
Fiery, "full-voiced” humbuckers
It only takes one glance to detect the Cabronita’s calling card – a pair of re-voiced Gretsch FilterTron pickups, which Eldred labeled FideliTron. These “fiery, full-voiced” humbuckers are tweaked slightly more towards a Fender single coil sound – not as beefy as the Gretsch unit and not a true single coil, although headed that way – with perhaps a smidge of Rickenbacker jangle in the mix as well. Whichever way you look at it, these are absolutely the ideal pickups for the Cabronita. Classic Tele twang meets vintage Gretsch tone!
Bought on a whim
Our ‘Special Edition’ 2012 Cabronita here was “bought on a whim” by a well known local player, who soon realized that it was far too ballsy a guitar for the music she is currently playing, leaving the guitar in fabulous, barely used condition. The transparent White Blonde finish is 99.9999% perfect, and, while we couldn’t capture it in the photos, the grain shows subtly through on the lovely one-piece Ash body.
Ash body
Requiring considerably more preparation before painting, an Ash body was a $150 upgrade on the Cabronita, with all other color options featuring cheaper Alder bodies. The combination of the sonically superior Ash, with the really nice one-piece Maple neck/board, here delivers around twenty seconds of fantastic natural sustain
Guitar simplicity 101
The very slightly more rounded ‘C’-profile neck has a 9½” radius and 21 medium jumbo frets. The FideliTron pickups ae run through a 3-way switch and a volume control – guitar simplicity 101. A string-thru, hardtail bridge rounds out the lesson in keeping it simple for maximum bang.
Deluxe Fender flight case
Being pro-owned, this fantastic Cabronita comes in the deluxe Fender flight case shown in pic # 8. With a reinforced metal frame & hinges, plus TSA locks, the flight case was a $260 upgrade on the original purchase price. With a retail price of $1349, generally “discounted” in the stores to $999, at only $970 you’re getting a near new Cabronita, with what amounts to a bonus of the deluxe Fender flight case.
