The serious player
Every single detail of the Les Paul Custom made it the obvious guitar of choice for the serious player: that solid Mahogany slab body, (no weight-relief here, this is solid timber, all the way through, tipping the guitar scales at 10lb 10 1/2 oz / 4.85kg); solid Mahogany neck, (1957 medium C-profile); solid Ebony board, with the Custom's famous 12" radius; 500k taper pots; the large mother-of-pearl inlays; medium-jumbo frets, (so player-friendly low that the guitars came to be known as "fretless wonders").
PAFs
Ted McCarty refined the Custom's design, while Seth Lover perfected the hum-cancelling pickups, which were soon universally referred to as humbuckers. The most desirable vintage pickups in the vintage guitar trade are those original late fifties Les Paul 'PAF' humbuckers with the Patent Applied For stickers on the back, (see pic # 4). Gibson's super-cool Custom's '57 Classic PAFs deliver that solid mahogany tone astonishingly accurately!
Seth Lover
Almost all the great features on this classic Les Paul model made their first appearance on the 1957 'Black Beauty', from the fretless wonder frets and Seth Lover's humbuckers to the Ebony fingerboard and gold plated hardware, the Les Paul Custom really was a (black) beauty. In its 3-pickup and Bigsby variation, this is as rare and gimme-gimme as classic axes get.
