The SJ-200, originally known as the Southern Jumbo, was designed by American country singer Ray Whitley and made its debut towards the end of 1937. Gibson gave Whitley the first instrument completed and he played it his entire career. Today, Whitley's guitar is on permanent exhibition in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. (Historical side-note: A steelworker before he got his big break in music and film, Whitley was part of the construction crew on New York's famous Empire State Building)
King of the Flattops
In Gibson's own words, the "King of the Flattops" is unsurpassed in sound, volume and projection, with both a supremely comfortable weight and superb playability. The sound is crisp and clean, right across, with no muddiness at all in the bottom end. In fact, the bottom end is the epitome of tight and punchy.
Lady Gaga, Ron Wood, Gene Autry
The list of players is incredible; Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Page, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, (who shows off his cherished SJ-200 on the front cover of Nashville Skyline), Neil Young, Pete Townshend, Bruce Springsteen, David Crosby, Lady Gaga, Ron Wood, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers... and heaps more of music's most famous names.
Plug in and play
The Southern Jumbo is one of the most versatile acoustic guitars that money can buy - it strums, it picks, it whispers, it thrashes. And, factory-fitted with six hundred dollars worth of Fishman 'Ellipse Aura' pickup & preamp system, it's 100% ready for the studio or stage - just plug in and play!
Elite instrument building
Every component, every traditional construction technique, every aspect of this guitar is a reflection of everything that comes from over a century of elite instrument building: AAA-grade Sitka Spruce top; AAA-grade Maple back & sides; two-piece Maple neck, with Walnut centre strengthening strip; hot hide glue dovetail neck joint; hand carved & scalloped top bracing, which focuses the sound towards the centre of the body, for maximum projection; genuine Vintage Sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish; Mother of Pearl inlays... and on and on and on!
Other features include Indian Rosewood fingerboard and 'moustache' bridge, gold Grover Rotamatic tuners, Tusq nut, compensated saddle and hand etched and painted scratchplate. It's almost impossible for any guitar, let alone such a high end model, to have - or need - more appointments.
