No longer in production, the True Vintage edition of Gibson’s famous SJ-200 acoustic was the hallmark in faithfully accurate reproduction of vintage, handcrafted guitar craftsmanship. No surprise then that prices have been steadily climbing since the company replaced the True Vintage model with their bizarrely named “New Vintage” version. As the no expense spared top-of-the-range model, the only way you could pay more for a faithfully accurate SJ-200 was by registering for one of the 175, highly customised Bob Dylan signature models, produced two or three years back. (Now selling for $15k – $20k!)
The Super Jumbo
The Super Jumbo was specially designed to be heard above the strident acoustic dancehall “orchestras” of the late 1930s – the days before pickups and amplification. As Gibson themselves said of the SJ-200, “It's still a thrill to hear the well-balanced sound of a Super Jumbo ring out loud and clear, the maple sides and spruce top pumping out a throaty tone that's equally great for hi-octane strumming and delicate fingerpicking. Everyone from rockers to country artists to blues greats choose these guitars for their incredible sound, projection, build quality, and, let's face it, stunning looks.”
A lifetime of perfection
Beginning with premium components – AAA-grade Adirondack Red Spruce top, AAA-grade Eastern Curly Maple back & sides, with matching flame Maple neck, (and Mahogany centre stripe) – the top luthiers at Gibson’s acoustic works in Montana meticulously measured, cut, shaved, polished and buffed every True Vintage to absolute perfection, including the genuine vintage nitro finish, to maintain the vintage specifications. An historically accurate dovetail neck joint ensures a lifetime of perfection, likewise the use of hot hide glue during construction.
More premium components
Madagascar rosewood fingerboard and bridge; premium Mother-of-Pearl fingerboard and bridge inlays; precision cut bone nut and saddle; vintage accurate, gold-plated deluxe tuners; 6-ply top binding and 4-ply for the back; beautiful floral-and-vine scratchplate, faithfully modelled from the 1937 original and fully hand painted.
An heirloom instrument
Already sounding fantastic, the tone and projection of this truly awesome acoustic will only improve with age, making it very much an heirloom instrument. (You may have to take out a restraining order to stop your kids wanting to get an early start on it!) Internal bracing is identical to that of the 1937 SJ-200: light weight and hand-scalloped, focusing the guitar’s natural sound towards the centre of the body, for maximum projection. The braces are meticulously placed to encourage a powerful low end, detailed mids and sparkling highs – in short, the perfect acoustic guitar.
Straight out of a private Melbourne collection, where it has seen very little playtime, the guitar is in Excellent++ condition, with just the lightest of strumming marks and a couple of very light surface indentations on top. As shown in pic # 5, the SJ-200 comes complete with its original, deluxe “Cali Girl” style hard shell case, in matching condition, and original Gibson paperwork.
