Description

About 45min west of San Antonio, Texas, and a couple of hours north of the old wild west town of Laredo, the little farming town of Hondo, (population 9000), has a Dairy Queen, a bunch of burger outlets and a Walmart. Other than two bank robberies in the early 1920s, (both on the same night!), Hondo has never had a whole lot going for it, however back in 1969 the town’s name was appropriated by a couple of guitar fanatics from up the road in Fort Worth, for a new line of guitars they were having custom built overseas*. Skip forward fifteen years to the glory days of “hair rock” and Hondo was there with affordable – and pointy – guitars, for every young metal axe-grinder wannabe.

An exceptional all-rounder

The single humbucker H-1 was even pointier than the twin single-coil H-2 and snagged itself the nickname, ‘Death Dagger’, while Hondo catalogues showed the H-2 under a banner reading ‘Metal Master’ – an odd tag, as sound-wise it’s great at just about everything but metal! Check out or soundfile and hear the H-2 excel at rock, boogie, long, drawn-out bluesy notes, Jazzmaster/surf sounds... this guitar is an exceptional all-rounder. And even more exceptional for the price!

Built for the serious player

In combination with the P-90-style pickups, 500k tone and volume pots, a full two-octave, 24-fret neck, 12” radius and GraphTech nut, this is a guitar built for the serious player. The H-2 also has some serious players weight to it, too, its 9lb / 4.1kg heft providing a decent natural sustain of around 12 – 15 seconds. Freshly set up with new Ernie Ball ‘Custom Slinky’ 10s, you can probably tell by the soundfile that the H-2 is all ready to go, with nice, low action and spot-on intonation.

Postbox Red

Some of the original eighties models were finished in Candy Apple Red, while our example here is more like ‘Postbox Red’, which gives our H-2 a noticeably more modern appearance.

New old stock

The guitar is “new old stock”, which we recently discovered lurking in our storage area. We believe it came from a limited production run in 2010. Never sold, still in near factory condition, for only $720 this is the best value electric guitar we will offer all year. (Christmas is approaching rapidly. Hint, hint)

Free courier delivery

The Hondo H-2 comes with free courier delivery to any Australian address, or $100 airfreight to New Zealand, $175 to the US, Canada, UK and mainstream European countries

*History Note: The overseas production company eventually became Samick and the Hondo name eventually made way for Charvel.
