Gibson LP ‘The Paul’ Deluxe, 1981 – custom color
The majority of instruments in “The Paul” range were the standard, non-Deluxe model, with a one-piece Walnut body – this superb, all original Les Paul model is the more rare slab Mahogany version, complete with an Ebony board, and a killer set of original Dirty Fingers humbuckers.
Most likely due to the correct covers not arriving in time, the first 50 or so Paul Deluxes came with ‘Firebrand’ above “The Paul” Deluxe on the truss-rod cover. It didn’t really make sense to use them, as these guitars were not part of the Firebrand range, (nor are they the same as the significantly cheaper “Paul Firebrand Deluxe” model), and confusion has reigned ever since.
The guitar is in really excellent, all original condition, with just some honest play wear, including the odd paint chip and small ding here and there, but nothing bad – in fact, what wear there is only enhances its appearance. The frets are in great shape, and the rock-solid, 3-piece Mahogany neck plays exactly how you want a vintage Les Paul to play – you can unpack this beauty, plug her in and gig with her that night. At 3.5kg, (7.85lb), it’s the perfect weight for an all-Mahogany Les Paul, and the pickups sound absolutely fantastic!
Genuinely vintage at 28 years old, a Paul Deluxe will usually be priced well over three-thousand dollars in Australia – this one, finished in the extremely rare custom color, Vintage Goldburst – is only $2830!
