Dobro Steel Body Resonator, NEAR MINT!
Virtually identical to the original 1935 – 1939 National/Dobro Duolian models, this DS33, or ‘Model 33 Steel’ is a real “under-the-bed” find, with barely a fingerprint, mark or scratch on it! This magnificent Dobro looks like it left the Dopyera family’s Dobro factory at Huntington Beach only a few weeks ago, and appears to have never even had a strap attached. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the most famous hand-built acoustic instruments of all time.
One of the very last OMI, California-built, Dobro models, the DS33 sits somewhere between a Duolian and a Triolian, (diehards argue over the differences between the two models to this day). Once Gibson bought the company and shifted production to Nashville, construction of the instruments was downgraded, including a thinner (cheaper) gauge steel for the bodies, and the expensive timber-like finish dropped in favor of a cheaper powder-coat. But this 1996 model is the real deal, with the heavier gauge steel for exceptional tone, plus lovely rolled-in f-holes, rather than Gibson’s cheaper flat-cut, and the chrome-plated resonator in place of the cheaper painted version.
The stunning two-tone Vintage Amberburst blends perfectly with the finish on the round, hard-rock Maple neck, which is topped with a 14/19-fret Rosewood board and mother-of-pearl dot markers. Another nice feature are the smooth, rolled-in f-holes, which add an extra degree of quality, to what is already an outstandingly fine instrument. The resonator system is the larger size 10˝” inverted single-cone, with traditional biscuit bridge, plus a compensated Maple and Ebony saddle. This combination really delivers that cutting Dobro sound, with amazing clarity, precision and projection!
The guitar plays superbly, in both finger-style and casual slide playing, and of course a riser nut can easily be added for more regular slide use. (We have hand cut a riser nut specially for this guitar, and will include it in the case, at no cost. Just loosen the strings to slip the riser nut in over the existing nut)
This magnificent Dobro is in truly excellent condition – it looks to have barely been played – and ships in its original Dobro logo hard shell case, which is also in very nice condition – the combination lock has never even been set. Get yourself a piece of history, while gems like this are still affordable!
