The golden years of the original Les Paul were the years from 1958 to 1960, with many considering the pinnacle of early refinements as being the 1960 model, with it’s superb, thin-profile neck. Likewise, many see the Classic 1960 model as the high point in Gibson’s painstakingly crafted reissues, making it one of the most highly desirable of all the historic reissues – and none more so than the famous Goldtop version.

From Gibson Memphis Custom, this 2006 model, stunningly finished in lustrous Bullion Gold, is in superb condition, and 100% original, including its original hard shell case. The top is immaculate, the frets look almost unplayed, and there’s just a few tiny dinglets here and there to show that it’s been played, plus some light buckle-rash on the back. The thin, ultra-fast, 1960-profile neck allows for hour after hour of effortless playing, on what is one of the most iconic of all electric guitars.

The super-hot 496R neck and 500T bridge pickups pack exactly the punch and tone you want and expect from a classic Les Paul, and the other features are just as top-of-the-line: solid Maple-capped Mahogany body; Vintage inked serial number, just as used on the original 1952 – 1960 models); MOP trapezoid inlays; engraved ‘1960’ on the pickguard; and as mentioned above, this killer axe ships in its original Gibson hard shell case.

No longer in production, the Les Paul Classic model had an Australian RRP of $5200 for standard colors, (around $6000 for the Goldtop), and while well-played standard production colors do appear every now and then, you’ll be waiting a long time for a Goldtop to come on the market. Original 1960 Les Paul Goldtops regularly sell for more than $200,000 dollars, so this awesome ’06 reissue could represent a saving of at least $195,000!
