Gibson SG/Kalamazoo KG-2A – 1967. MINT!!

Here’s an absolutely incredible vintage Gibson instrument from Just Guitars Australia…

This amazing guitar was recently discovered in the back room of one of a string of shops in southern California, which had been sealed shut during a divorce dispute in the mid-eighties. In preparation for auctioning the site, the local real estate company had to remove welded steel sheets from the windows and doors before they could begin looking around in amazement at what turned out to be a virtual treasure trove. … vintage books in a bookshop, 25 year old cruise brochures in a travel agents, a fully outfitted kitchen in a former restaurant… and a miscellaneous collection of guitars, banjos, keyboards and more in what had once been a thriving local music store.

Lurking inside an old Gibson shipping box with ‘Sample’ stamped on the outside, was this quite astonishing Kalamazoo KG-2A, Gibson’s “budget” version of the SG, (which had originally appeared in 1960 as the then-new shape of the Les Paul Standard). And, while by rights this should be the typical budget version, some serious detective work has resulted in the belief that it’s either a pre-production dealer sample, or an extremely early 1967 production model, featuring a solid Maple body, rather than the laminated masonite of the regular models available to the public. (Strongly supporting the dealer sample theory are 1965-dated pots, plus a very early 1967 serial number, when the model wasn’t released until 1968)

The guitar had clearly never been removed from the shipping box and certainly never been played. All we’ve done to it since buying it from the dealer who discovered it is oiled the Rosewood board and seen to the fret ends, instantly making this a fabulously smooth player that will have you grinning like an idiot the minute you plug it in! It is 100% original, including the short arm Gibson Vibrola system, examples of which can sell separately for several hundred dollars! (We could just about pull the guitar apart and sell the vintage parts for more than we have it listed for, intact!)

Driven by a pair of high power Melody Maker style single-coil pickups, (measured resistance of 7.3ohm bridge/7.4 neck), this wondrous little beast howls like a cross between its big SG brother and a vintage Mustang – tone, glorious tone!! Looks plus tone, all in one killer package. Speaking of looks, while it was called Pelham Blue on other Gibson guitars, for reasons unknown to us mere mortals, on the Kalamazoo range the same color here was known as Las Vegas Blue. Whatever. Once you get your hands on the great playing, slim Maple neck, (very similar to the standard modern C-profile), you’re never going to want to put this thing down!

This absolutely fantastic Kalamzoo KG-2A ships in a recent, silver logo, deluxe Gibson hard shell case. And remember, all Just Guitars instruments include FREE COURIER DELIVERY to any address in Australia!
