Jackson PS-1 Performer, mid-90s - LA studio used!
Studio quality at an insanely low price. This great-playing 22-fret PS-1 Performer came to us direct from a well-known recording studio in LA, where it’s been part of the in-house gear lineup for the last decade or so, during which time it’s been used on countless US radio and TV ads, film scores and other session work. (You can tell it’s a studio axe, with just some light playwear on the front, [mostly on the scratchplate], while the back is almost mint!)
We’re well aware of just how good the Performer models are, as we’ve had a couple in before – one in Black and one in a Blue sparkle finish – so we grabbed this one as soon as it came up. The standard PS-1s had something of a noise-band reputation, but the Performer models were a whole different story, with many of them gravitating to pro use.
The PS-1 seems to have just about every base covered: the middle pickup is perfect for rhythm; the neck has got blues tone down pat; and play around with tone and volume controls, and you can make the humbucker do just about anything you want!
With a serial number indicating very early Japanese production, the PS-1 Performer has a thin, fast, 22-fret neck, (medium frets, in perfect condition), solid Alder body, all Black hardware, stock Jackson plate-backed, single-single-hum pickups, matched to 500k pots and a sealed 5-way se1ector switch. The body size is very slightly smaller than a Strat, making it super-comfy to play.
Intonation is spot-on, the trem system is highly responsive, the neck plays beautifully, with perfect, medium-low action, and a nice, almost Ebony-like attack off the Rosewood board – no wonder it’s been so popular!
A great mid-90s axe from Wayne Jackson’s Charvel company, the PS-1 comes in a deluxe road-case, which is in just as nice condition as the guitar itself, making for doubly great value
