From the mid-nineties, across the next four decades, Alfonso Checa, (checha), was one of Spain's top guitar builders, winning prestigious awards from Malaga to Madrid's huge International Exposition in the early fifties. Although he would exhibit further afield, Checa was a lifelong resident of Baza, in the Granada region of southern Spain, where he had his esteemed workshop.

Checa's quality was such that he was often contracted to build guitars for several other Spanish makers, notably Ramirez. (Check out George Harrison's gorgeous Ramirez playing on the Beatles 'And I Love Her')
Great for a learner
Our Model 1 Special here features all prime timbers - something Checa was renowned for; German Spruce top, book-matched Italian Walnut back, Maple sides, and a silky smooth Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. A 2¹/16" (52mm) nut width makes it super easy to navigate the board - either very forgiving for an established player, or great for a learner.
Timbers are aged to perfection
The Model 1 Special boasted virtually the same construction as the more upmarket Estudio 1, just built with a little less bling. at 14½" the body is just a hair larger than ¾-size, but with its fan bracing and tall, hand-cut Spruce braces, the guitar projects like a motherfu jumbo! Incredible bottom end depth for a guitar of this size, along with beautiul mids and crystal clear treble notes. Built half a century ago, the timbers are aged to perfection, delivering vintage harmonics that could well brings everyone in the room to tears.
Astonishingly fine condition
In astonishingly fine condition, fifty years on, there's just a couple of small dinglets around the top edge on the back, (see pic # 6), likely from a stand. Other than that, magnifico! Frets are perfect, no fingerboard divots, no soundhole wear - just an exceptional combination of wood and wire. And the weight - or lack therof - the guitar weighs just 3lb 8oz. You'll have no trouble whatsoever doing a whole gig with this one!
