This is probably the nicest 5-string bass we’ve had through the door here at Just Guitars. A one owner from new, 1991 MusicMan StingRay 5. Now into her third decade and unbelievably looking like she left the factory in California only six months ago!
Early 6-bolt StingRay 5
In the quite rare Translucent Natural finish, this is a very early 6-bolt StingRay 5, universally hailed as one of the most rock-solid basses of all time. Ernie Ball promised their then recently deployed 6-bolt neck system offered perfect alignment, with “No shifting, ever!”
Big Alnico magnets
A real bonus feature of the early StingRay 5 models was that all pickups were individually hand assembled in the Ernie Ball factory, with each humbucker unit receiving 10 whopping big Alnico magnets for a kick few other basses could match. Flame and Birseye
The hand selected Maple neck is another real plus here, with both subtle flame and Birdseye! The neck is smooth and fast – “velvet” finished – for hour after hour of effortless play time.
Premium-grained Ash body
Other top line features of your StingRay 5 include a premium-grained Ash body, (check out pic # 5), that is no lightweight, at 9lb 14oz, (4.5kg); hardened steel bridge plate, with stainless-steel bridge saddles; 22 jumbo frets, (in great condition, good for another 20 years); Music Man stamped tuners by Schaller; and body-end “capstan” truss-rod adjuster.
Electronics
The electronics are what really give the StingRay 5 its monster advantage over other bases, with the selector switch giving you the options of both coils in series, single-coil, or both coils in parallel. Run through the Music Man 9v active pre-amp, you have cut & boost across both bass and treble bands. The control knobs feature a centre detent position, signifying “flat” – roll off to the left for less bass or treble and to the right for more.
A luscious warm glow
Complete with its original hard shell case, your StingRay 5 has developed a really nice, faint peach tint to its Translucent Natural lacquer, giving it a luscious warm glow that few other instruments can offer.
