While many players say the Bonnie Raitt signature model Strat was the best Fender have ever made, (and hugely desirable in Blueburst!), the Clapton was the very first signature model Fender released, way back in 1988 – almost forty years ago now.
Lace Sensors
The Strat went through several prototype variations before EC was happy, including a couple of different neck profiles, at least three volume boost circuits – each more powerful than the last – and the swapping of Fender’s own Elite series pickups for a trio of gold Lace Sensors. (Our Series One model here is one of the very last with the Lace pickups, as by the end of the year, Fender had decided to go fully in-house, and began loading the Clapton model with their own Vintage Noiseless units)
Neck
Much has been made of Sir Slowhand’s preference for the signature model’s eventual soft-V profile neck, though we must say that the neck on this ’99 example is noticeably more like a compensated ’57 than a soft-V, flattening off perfectly around the seventh or eighth fret, for completely effortless playing!
Features
Standard features include a solid Alder body; one-piece Maple neck & fingerboard, with rolled edges, 9½” radius, and 22 vintage style frets. Controls are a standard 5-way selector switch, master volume control, (with 25db active mid boost), and master TBX tone control.
Condition is amazing!
For a well-played, 27 year old guitar, the condition is amazing! The Pewter finish is almost unmarked; the metal parts, aside from the screws, look almost new; frets are near perfect; there’s no fingerboard divots, just a couple of capo edge marks at frets seven and ten. Straight off the bench with a fresh setup, and a new set of DR 'Black Beauties', your EC Strat is all ready to plug in and go.
