Right from the very start, Gibson’s J-45 was built to be a singer’s perfect supporting instrument, and is acknowledged as such, the world over. Now into its 85th year of production, a J-45 doesn’t compete with you, it effortlessly places itself at that exact point your vocals require – no drums, no bass, no keyboards necessary. It really is no great surprise seeing big name artists up on a stage with no other accompaniment than a trusted J-45.
Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Vince Gill
Some of those big names go a long way back, too; Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Lightnin' Hopkins and many more. Modern era J-45 players include Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams, Vince Gill, Aimee Mann, John Leventhal, Steve Earle, Kacey Musgraves, Jeff Tweedy, Grace Potter, Rhiannon Giddens, Margo Price, (who, last year was honored with her own ‘Redtail Hawk’ signature model)… and here’s one you weren’t expecting: Monty Python’s Eric Idle wrote ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life’ on his 1963 model.
007
The gloss nitro Vintage Sunburst-finished solid Sitka spruce top, framed by classic 5-ply binding, is the look that’s drawn untold thousands of players to a J-45 over the years. The rich deep brown of the top continues on to the solid Mahogany neck, back and sides. The neck is Gibson’s super player-friendly ‘slim taper’, or flattened-C profile. The 12” radiused Rosewood fingerboard features genuine mother-of-pearl inlays. Grover Rotomatic tuners, Tusq nut and compensated saddle, with vintage-look pins, round out the exterior. Inside you get hand-scalloped X-bracing, and the superb LR Baggs VTC under-saddle pickup system. Oh, and while we’re inside, check out the cool 007 serial number!
Exclusive 2016 etching
Completed at Gibson’s Bozeman, Montana acoustic facility on the morning of September 4th, 2015, ahead of its launch at the start of the new year, the J-45, L-00, SJ-200, (and possibly others, but basically the hallmark models for that year), featured an exclusive 2016 etching on the truss-rod cover. This was Gibson indicating that they were noticeably upping their game from this point on, with touches such as super-fine sanding work and hand-rubbed finishes, more traditional glues, a more professional feel to the rolled fingerboard edges, plus upgrading to the premium quality VTC pickup.
Condition
As we noted at the front, the guitar plays and sounds exactly like the classic it’s always been, with perfect string-to-string definition, and tone that’s as easily Buddy Holly or Lucinda as it is you. For a pro-owned and played instrument now into its second decade, the condition is Excellent-, mostly just some very light playwear on the scratchplate and a couple of faint strap marks near the jack.
