The renowned L-00 has been around since the early 1930s, and was blowing people away right from the start, with the quite astonishing projection that is delivered from a smaller body guitar. (NOTE: Often erroneously listed as a parlor guitar, the L-00 is actually a full-scale instrument. As well as being slightly larger than a parlor, it also has the regular body shape of a dreadnought)
Punchier
Sometimes compared with Martin’s 00-18, you’ll likely find the L-00 considerably more suited to country, country-blues, blues and roots music than the Martin, (which can lean more towards folk and pop strumming). The L-00 is punchier, better for lead work in the aforementioned styles, but also quite capable elsewhere, such as jazz, which you’ll be hard-pressed to get out of the Martin.
A work of art
Gibson have offered several takes on the L-00 over the last thirty years or so, but this Mystic Rosewood version from the Custom Shop really takes the cake, from its hand-rolled fingerboard edges, to the exquisite abalone snowflake inlays, to the hand-rubbed high-gloss finish, utilising elite-grade Custom Shop polishing compounds. This is truly a work of art.
