Description

Here’s a great limited edition Les Paul that’s pretty much spent its whole life in Nashville. It was built at Gibson’s Nashville plant; it was bought new by a local Nashville player; and it’s spent most of its life in Nashville – occasional out-of-town gigs excepted.

Limited Edition

Gibson’s 2007 ‘Guitar of the Week’ series featured a slew of brilliant variations on some of the company’s most revered models – each presented in exclusive Limited Edition runs of only 400 instruments. Week 33 was the Les Paul Classic Antique Mahogany, and it was as if they waited this far into the series to really pull out all the stops!

Premium A-grade Mahogany body

From the premium A-grade Mahogany body to the old-style ‘Americana’ Gibson headstock logo in scintillating Abalone, the Classic Antique Mahogany is a cool machine from tip to toe. The body and the Mahogany neck feature an antiqued binding; the carved top is satin finished in Antique Vintage Sunburst lacquer, (think dark, antique Tobaccoburst).

12" radius

The neck is the slim taper, sixties profile, and the lovely, chocolatey Rosewood board has a nice, player-friendly 12” radius. The inlays are vintage/antique toned, rounding out the aged appearance of this uber cool axe.

'57 Classic humbuckers

At the business end, the guitar is powered by a set of ’57 Classic humbuckers, (a ’57 Classic at the neck and a ’57 Classic Plus at the bridge), and the second you plug in you’re aware of the hot ceramic bite and snarl. The ’57 Classics feature Alnico II magnets, nickel pole-pieces, vintage enamel wire, Maple spacers, twin conductor braided leads and are wax potted to avoid unwanted feedback. Already a very resonant guitar – around 15 seconds of acoustic sustain – the ’57 Classics work in perfect synchronicity with the Mahogany body and neck to absolutely nail ‘vintage tone’, with a hint of modern humbucker edginess when it’s needed.

NOTE: Players chasing a more PAF-type humbucker tone have been known to remove the Classic Plus bridge humbucker and replace it with another ’57 Classic to match the neck unit. However, a cheaper and less invasive alternative is replacing the factory-fitted nut with a fossilized mammoth tusk nut, which pulls those bridge highs back quite noticeably. (We can do this for you at no charge if requested at the time of purchase. A hand cut mammoth tusk nut would otherwise be a $120 install)

Condition

In overall Excellent+ condition, the original pickguard had never been fitted. Having temporarily installed it for our photos, it has now been removed and is back in the case pocket with the rest of the case candy, mentioned below. As shown in pic # 7, there is a patch of buckle-rash in exactly the same “low-slung” location as that on our Inca Silver Strat. (Same Nashville owner) Action is perfect, as are the frets and the all nickel hardware.

An absolute bargain

Shipping in its original Gibson hard shell case, the Les Paul Classic Antique Mahogany is all set to become your immediate go-to guitar. It comes complete with the original Gibson strap-locks, optional plain truss-rod cover, (see pic # 5), and is an absolute bargain at just $3150. This is less than these guitars sold for new – in American dollars!
