If there’s one thing Les Paul Specials and Juniors are known for, it’s a snappy, snarly bite that their bigger siblings just don’t have. Load it up with a pair of stacked P-90s, (aka hum-free P-100s), and you’ve got yourself a mean, mean rock’n’roll machine!
Heavyweight body
These were a limited run by Gibson, in production for less than five years, with this great example completed at the company’s Nashville plant on the 3rd of May, 1999. The heavyweight body – a single piece of quarter-sawn Mahogany – matched to a very similar looking one-piece Mahogany neck, is such a resonant chunk of timber hat it almost beggars belief that it wasn’t put aside by Gibson for a Custom Shop Standard or Custom!
Pre-sixties
The mahogany neck is also a real standout, with what must surely have been a one-off shaping: while no wider at the nut, the profile is more like Martin’s flat-oval, making it reminiscent of a wider pre-sixties LP neck in the hand.
Perfect harmony
The nicely grained Rosewood fingerboard, with its mini trapezoid inlays, was obviously carefully selected to work perfectly with the Mahogany grain on the front, while the black of the knobs, scratchplate and pickup covers sit with the Natural body finish just right. Likewise the chromed stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge seem to be in perfect harmony with the frets. All in all, a beautifully put together guitar.
Snap and crackle and bite
Sonically, this thing is a real treat – the dual P-100s have all the snap and crackle and bite of P-90s, but without the hum. That bite is particularly noticeable in the neck pickup – either on its own, or paired with the bridge – with its tone control wound all the way up. Courtesy of pure Alnico V magnets, it’s a real vintage throwback tone that’s really at home in overdrive territory, but lets you dial back beautifully into all your clean areas.
