You’ll look at a Dennis Fano guitar sometimes and be completely stumped. How on earth does he design and build these brand new guitars, that look like they’ve been discovered in a fifties time capsule somewhere?! After selling his original Fano brand in 2009, Fano fans were overjoyed at Dennis’ reappearance five years later, with his new Novo brand.
The most popular
With their long list of hand-crafted features, most Novo models are around a two month build – longer for custom jobs such as this awesome Serus – and most currently have at least a 12 month wait time. And while the Serus isn’t the cheapest guitar in the Novo range, it’s far and away the most popular – to the extent that, built and fully finished by hand, Dennis Fano and his team have trouble keeping the Serus in stock. On the day we've listed this drool-worthy Candy Apple Red Metallic twin P-90 model, the company had not a single Serus in stock. Ex-Fenn Wilson, (whose new album is out later this year, once he returns from an extesive European tour), the custom build adds enormously to both the scarcity and desirability.
Leo Fender
The starting point here is the tempered Pine body, (like Leo Fender’s original Telecaster). Tempered, baked, cooked – call it what you will, the process brings tonal qualities to contemporary timbers that haven’t been heard in half a century or more. “Strong, clear, punchy midrange,” is the Fano/Nova claim. “Like what Alder would like to sound like if it could. It’s like wiring the pickup directly to the jack and turning off the compressor. Great response to touch – goes from singing to growling in a heartbeat.” It’s no idle claim – this thing is a beast – and super light!!
Clay dots
Joining in the tempering process, the neck is tempered Maple, which has also had the relic treatment, the flash-coat nitro finish hand-rubbed away to resemble an axe that’s clocked up thousands of hours on every kind of stage imaginable. Furthering that vintage vibe, genuine clay dots were stipulated as part of this Serus custom build.
A sonic weapon
Custom ordered as a light relic, (Novo prefer to say distressed), the ageing work is absolutely amazing – it really does look like a 40 or 50 year old guitar. And as well as the relic work, you’ll notice how much the pine grain really stands out: “We sand it with a very specific technique to raise the grain, so the player can feel it. And then we put a very light nitro finish over the top. We want the player to always be reminded the guitar is wood – it was alive and still is – as a sonic weapon. Feeling the grain really helps keep that vibe.”
