At the 2008 launch of the MD signature model, Carlos Santana described the event as a “sacred moment”. Incorporating most of the premium features from the previous incarnations of the Santana signature model, the MD upped the stakes with a custom-designed new piece of circuitry – the Mastering Voice Control – activated by an added mini-toggle, instantly switching in the classic, early sixties tone of what these days would be a forty or fifty thousand dollar Stratocaster.

“Sound is everything,” Carlos said, going on to add that, as the absolute pinnacle of guitar sound and design work, Paul Reed Smith’s instruments are the tools that let him stand on stage and “…give people chills.”
Classic construction
The Santana MD begins with the classic construction of a solid Mahogany back, carved flame Maple top, set Mahogany neck and 24-fret Rosewood fingerboard. The neck features the custom Santana wide-fat profile. The exquisite Artist Grade top is finished in Tortoise Shell nitro, the back and neck in a rich, dark brown. The top is accented with the Santana’s traditional inlaid Abalone stripes, (or “purfling” in guitar-speak), which glow beautifully against the Tortoise Shell finish, (see pic # 6). PRS proprietary low-mass locking tuners, Abalone silhouette bird inlays round out the top-of-the-range Santana features.
Just a hole
And, while technically “just a hole”, with its lovely rounded edges, the exposed tremolo cavity on the guitar’s rear is one of the sexiest bits of guitar design in years! (Pic # 4)
Some truly amazing sounds
Providing the guitar’s incredible output are a matched set of Santana MD bass & treble humbuckers, coupled with the 18v active Mastering Voice Control circuitry, which effectively switches in single coil, out-of-phase tone, which you can then adjust via the tone control to dial in some truly amazing sounds.
