This 1979 Ash body Strat, which Darren’s father purchased for him from a workmate, has absolutely everything going for it – looks, sound, playability… the lot. As Darren’s guitar tech told him, “This is one of the good ones!” And not just any good one, but a prized seventies Strat from Fender’s famous Fullerton factory in California. Sixties models are all well and good if you can afford one, but if you had the time to wade through a couple of hundred Fullerton seventies products, you’d eventually snag one that’s every bit the equal of a $50k, $60k, $80k, $100k sixties model. “This is one of the good ones!”

If only some custom shop relic work looked as good as this road warrior. There’s nothing fake here – just good, honest years of playing and natural ageing. Original paint, original body, original neck, original pickups – everything except the second Tone knob, which went AWOL somewhere in the murky depths of Darren’s famous campervan, and was replaced with a spare Volume knob, (see pic # 7), by his guitar tech. We’ll chuck an appropriate Tone knob in the case, should you wish to spoil this nice little touch of Gympie quirkiness.

Boasting low seventies frets, and correspondingly almost illegally low action, the guitar plays like one of Gibson’s famous “fretless wonders”. With pots dated the 22nd week of 1979, neck the 34th week, and pickups the 35th week, this is a real chance-of-a-lifetime offering.
