It's a real thrill to be in just the right place at exactly the right time. We recently got to snap up this fantastic 1965 Duo-Sonic just hours after the late owner's wife had brought it into town to sell. A genuine Texas cowboy, who played in a couple of local bands on weekends, he had owned his Duo-Sonic II since new – and played it pretty much every day for the past four-and-a-half decades!
250km to the Mexican border
Picture it… San Antonio, Texas – 250 kilometers west to the Mexican border, 300km or so east to Houston, another 150 north-east to Austin, – and pretty much anywhere to the north-west it's just hundreds and hundreds of kilometers of that famous Texas landscape, right out of the Hollywood movies... of course you're gonna play your guitar every day!
Radiates vintage axe
This guitar absolutely radiates vintage axe that's been played and played and played. "And it didn't get buried or burnt up with him!" the dealer wryly noted. (Apparently being buried with your favorite guitar is a Texas cowboy tradition) Completely original – including the original black and silver hard shell case – this thing is loaded with a pair of the best-sounding vintage Fender pickups we've ever heard. Solid Poplar body, original grey-backed pickups, original pots dated the 12th week of 1965, with nice, useful range on both the tone and volume controls – it just doesn't get any better than this! Oh wait, yes it does; original cloth wiring, original 'lemondrop' capacitor, original brass shielding plate, great action, a smooth playing neck… and did we mention the killer original pickups? Condition
Aside from the assorted dings and scuffs shown in the photos, the scratchplate is in very nice condition and there's only very light wear on the board & frets, mostly around the upper "cowboy positions", including light divots in the Rosewood at the first and second positions, shown upper left in pic # 8. (These light divots really aren't worth worrying about, but if you would like us to make them disappear, we can do so with an easy morning's work – just let us know)
No cracks, no repairs, no alterations – an all original, 22-fret, long-scale 1965 Duo-Sonic II that plays great and sounds absolutely fantastic! (With both reverse-wound/reverse polarity pickups switched into use together, your Duo-Sonic effectively switches to humbucker mode)
Mustang without the hassle
Our last Duo-Sonic II sold for $3150, but despite prices almost doubling last year, as players everywhere seemed to suddenly discover that here's a Mustang without the sometimes troublesome tremolo system, we've managed to keep the price down to make this a truly awesome vintage bargain, at just $2890!
