When is a Mustang not a Mustang? When it’s a Duo-Sonic. Well, that’s how it used to go, back in the sixties and seventies, when a Mustang without a tremolo system was basically a Duo-Sonic, (and vice versa). When Fender introduced their Offset Series, back in 2016, it seemed they had the old jape in mind, and were up for a laugh, because alongside a Mustang without a tremolo system, there was a Duo-Sonic with one!
P-90s
And not only did the new Mustang not have a tremolo system, it also did away with those finicky slider switches, which could easily become scratchy, erratic, or even completely dead. Here you have a standard 3-way, providing regular neck, middle and bridge options. And those often thin sounding Mustang singlecoils…? Also gone, replaced on the Mustang 90 with a killer set of P-90s! (Running through mid-range 375k pots)
Woman Tone
As we noted at the front, the neck pickup here comes dangerously close to Eric Clapton’s legendary “Woman Tone” – something no other Mustang before it has ever done. It can play nice & sweet, but seems much happier at the gnarly end of things. The middle position is very balls-to-the-wall.
Grunt
Other differences between the Mustang 90 and the 1964 original include an Alder body, (replacing the cheaper Poplar), which also adds to the grunt this thing packs; individual bent-steel bridge saddles, (vintage Tele style, double Fender stamped); modern-C profile neck, with a nice satin finish on the back, for fast and comfortable playing; medium-jumbo frets; Tusq nut; and a 9½” radius to the Rosewood fingerboard.
An absolute breeze
With the Mustang’s traditional 24” scale the string tension is noticeably less than a Strat or Tele, making regular playing a much easier experience, and string bends an absolute breeze! And at just 7lb 4oz, this is a guitar you can enjoy that experience for hours on end.
Inca Silver
Inca Silver is one of Fender’s snazziest colors — cool and classy in any light. It was certainly the pick of the three Offset Series options back in 2016, the others being Olympic White and the forever unpopular Torino Red. (When the Mustang 90shifted to the budget Player series in 2020, the available choices became Aged Natural, Seafoam Green, and Burgundy Mist Metallic, while the Rosewood fingerboard switched to Pau Ferro)
