With Les Pauls from the 1958 to 1960 “glory years” currently changing hands at anywhere from US$100,000 – $400,000, it’s fairly safe to say that we mere mortals, chasing that famous look and legendary tone, need a Les Paul model that doesn’t involve selling the children for medical experiments.
A killer Les Paul
Here then is a killer Les Paul, factory fitted with Gibson’s authentic fifties-cloned P-90s, professionally owned, lightly played, and featuring a couple of rather cool upgrades. We can’t reveal the owner’s name, but you may well have seen this very guitar, live onstage at a local blues venue.
Golden era tone
As you can hear from our soundfile, this is a Les Paul that really nails that highly desirable golden era tone. Gibson achieved this by remaining true to fifty years of Les Paul tradition: Mahogany body; carved Maple top; traditional quarter-sawn Mahogany neck, (with the same 17 degree headstock pitch as the fifties originals); Rosewood fingerboard; vintage Kluson Deluxe-style tuners with vintage-tint buttons; Nashville tune-o-matic bridge & stopbar tailpiece… you get the idea – vintage and tradition, through and through.
Orange Drop caps
But wait, there’s more! Traditional gold “top-hat” knobs with chrome inserts, genuine Switchcraft 3-way selector switch, ‘Orange Drop’ tone capacitors – hand wired point-to-point, plus, exclusive to this first run of the 50s Tribute model, a see-thru smoked acrylic control cover, (see pic # 3).
Cool upgrades
Now, those cool upgrades we mentioned above. Magnificently offset against the Worn Satin White finish, the P-90s were significantly blinged up with gold-plated pickup covers. The regular pickguard was also changed to gold, and the standard gig bag was replaced with the top-of-the-range Gibson/Epiphone hard case, shown in pic # 8. (The original pickup covers and pickguard are included, should you ever wish to switch back to spec)
Ready for action
Gibson call the Studio range their “ready-for-action package”, and the 50s Tribute is about as ready for action as they come – you can take it out of the case and gig with it that night!
