The LG-1’s abiding reputation is that of a blues guitar. Its smaller body and ladder-bracing, as a rule, generally limiting unwanted sustain, and providing the tighter, more controlled tone demanded in blues playing. HOWEVER, here’s an LG-1 that totally breaks the rules!
Absolutely rings
With a stunning sixteen seconds(!) of natural sustain, this thing absolutely rings with crisp string-to-string clarity, that doesn’t evolve into gluggy overtones. It’s a picker, it’s a lead guitar, it’s a singer-songwriter instrument, it’s just a glorious piece of anomalous Gibson guitar making!
Tone to die for
Almost sixty years natural ageing has really brought the hand-selected Spruce top and Honduran Mahogany back & sides alive. This is truly tone to die for. Oh, and of course let’s not forget the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. All tone timbers, and all beautiful timber tone. Volume, too – almost as loud as a J-45. (We have a theory that the long-ago removed scratchplate may have given the Spruce top more room to move, resulting in bigger sound)
Condition
The nicely rounded C-shape necks on these – likely modelled on that of the famous late fifties Les Paul – feels like an old friend in your hand. Medium action, with the original wide-low frets showing very little wear. There’s barely a mark on the back of the neck, the back & sides are in phenomenal sixty year old condition, and other than some slight nitro/glue reaction traces where the scratchplate was removed, the top is in likewise fantastic shape. And it weighs practically nothing – see below.
