Built by Danelectro for Sears department stores, this is the guitar only from one of the famous Silvertone "amp-in-case" models from the sixties. Introduced in 1962 as an all-in-one 5 watt amp and single pickup guitar package, it was later joined by an 8w amp and twin pickup guitar. Building an amplifier into a guitar case was quite a marketing coup, and thousands of young American Beatles and Stones wannabe's bought them over the next few years.
Danelectro body construction
Featuring the patented Danelectro body construction system of a fabric tape-covered wood rim joining a masonite front and back, with a semi-hollow interior, plus the famous Danelectro lipstick pickup and aluminium nut, (see pic # 3), these guitars have a sound all their own. Not a Strat or Tele, not a Les Paul or a Gretsch, the Silvertone/Dano sound stands out from everything else around. And no doubt that's why many big name players have always had a soft spot for them – legendary players such as Arlen Roth, or Dickey Betts, (see pic # 4, above), of the Allman Brothers Band.
All original, great condition
The original CTS pots are dated the 46th week of 1963, making this either a very late 1963 or early '64 model. As well as the pots, everything else is all original, too, and in fabulous condition. Frets are in great shape, there's almost no play wear on the body or neck, and it plays and sounds great, with clean and smooth electrics, no scratchy pots and no hum!
Brazilian Rosewood!
The smart body design makes for an incredibly light guitar, with the semi-hollow construction adding a quality to the tone that belongs to a far more expensive instrument. The Black Sparkle finish, (described in the Sears catalogue as "Black with Silver accents"), is beautifully offset by the white fabric edge binding. Danelectro/Silvertone necks have been recognized right from the start as being far above the price of the rest of the instrument, and this neck is no exception – a dead straight piece of fine Poplar, topped by a generous slice of authentic Brazilian Rosewood! The neck profile is thin and sleek, maybe slightly thinner than today's common 'C' profile.
